Authorities said a suspect fled the area before officers arrived, but by around 10 a.m., Lakeville police located a vehicle believed to be connected to the killing. Officers initiated a traffic stop and the suspect fled on foot. He was taken into custody following a brief foot pursuit in the area of Upper 167th St. W. & Kenwood Trail. Officers used their Tasers at least twice before the suspect was successfully apprehended.

Dakota County Jail records show 48-year-old Jason Philip Filas was booked on probable cause second-degree murder. Authorities said there’s no ongoing threat to the public and the case remains under investigation by Burnsville police.

A family friend identified the victim to the Star Tribune as Danielle Grace Warren, mother to three children: a 10-year-old, 5-year-old and 8-month-old. Two of the kids were home at the time of her killing and family members confirmed Warren and Filas had been in a relationship.

Court documents reveal police found Warren on Wednesday inside the home and with stab wounds to her face, neck and chest. A 12-inch kitchen knife with blood on it was located in a nearby hallway.

Earlier that morning, Warren had called her sister as Filas was “freaking out” after he reportedly saw a man leave the house on the home security camera. Warren told her sister that she was scared of Filas and wanted her keys so she could leave the house and go to the sister’s. She then called her sister a second time and pretended to be talking to the police as Filas was somewhere inside the house. Warren then suddenly started screaming, “he has a knife, call 911, call 911,” before the call was disconnected.

Her sister immediately called 911 and then called Warren back to check on her, but Filas instead answered the phone, allegedly saying “she should have never cheated on me, you better call 911,” and turned off the phone.

Minnesota court records show Filas has a prior conviction for fifth-degree assault and was charged with domestic assault for a March 2025 incident involving Warren. She had filed a no-contact order against him earlier this year and on April 2, 2025, he allegedly violated the order when Burnsville police pulled him over for a speeding violation and saw Warren with him in the car. He pleaded guilty and was scheduled to be sentenced for the violation July 9.

Filas made his first court appearance for the second-degree murder charge on Friday, May 9, with bail set at $2 million ahead of another hearing set for May 27.
