A Minneapolis man is facing charges after a police pursuit and standoff late Tuesday night in Minnetonka.

It prompted a multi-agency response and shut down a stretch of Hopkins Crossroad, just north of I-394 in the west metro.

The incident began around 10:15 p.m. on April 8, 2025, when a Minnetonka officer on patrol observed a driver making several traffic violations in the area of I-394 and Hopkins Crossroad. Suspecting the driver may be impaired, the officer attempted a traffic stop. The driver did not stop and instead led officers on a brief pursuit that lasted less than a mile before coming to a stop.

The driver—identified only as a 31-year-old man from Minneapolis—refused multiple commands to exit the vehicle and appeared highly agitated, prompting officers to take extra safety precautions. Armored vehicles were brought in to contain the situation and prevent the driver from fleeing again. Officers used those vehicles to block in the suspect's car and establish a secure perimeter, Minnetonka PD tells us.

With concerns for both officer and public safety, a standoff ensued. A crisis negotiator was brought in and spent considerable time attempting to deescalate the situation. Eventually, just before midnight—at approximately 11:54 p.m.—the driver surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody without incident.

He was arrested on suspicion of fleeing police in a motor vehicle. Authorities say blood tests are pending to determine if the man was driving while under the influence.

In addition to Minnetonka Police, the incident prompted a large response from neighboring law enforcement agencies including Golden Valley, Hopkins, Plymouth and St. Louis Park Police, as well as deputies from the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and State Troopers.

The standoff concluded without injury and no shots were fired. Formal charges are expected as the investigation continues.
