Man Found Dead in Garage, St. Louis County Home Ablaze

St. Louis County deputies found a man dead Monday afternoon in a garage near Makinen, with his nearby home on fire.

Authorities say the call came in around 1:20 p.m., requesting officers check on the 71-year-old man after he sent text messages to a friend indicating self-harm.

Deputies arrived at a residence in the 6100 block of Peninsula Road, about 15 miles southeast of Eveleth, to find a residential home completely engulfed in fire.

The man was located deceased in a detached garage on the property and the residence was declared a total loss. Fire crews remained on scene into the evening Monday. Due to the rural location of the residence, additional crews were needed to help shuttle water.

The incident remains under investigation, but initial findings suggest his death was the result of self-harm and officials say there’s no threat to the public. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.
