Man Dies After Motorcycle Crashes Into Water-Filled Ditch
A 46-year-old man from Chisholm died Saturday after crashing his motorcycle into a water-filled ditch in Cherry Township.
The crash occurred around 4:34 p.m. on April 12 on Highway 5 near the intersection of Herman Road, about five miles east of Hibbing.
According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, emergency responders were dispatched after a 911 call from a witness who saw the motorcyclist heading northbound on Highway 5.
The witness reported that the motorcyclist was unable to navigate a curve in the roadway and crossed over the centerline, veering off the southbound side of the highway and plunging into a steep ditch filled with water.

The motorcyclist—who was the sole occupant—was ejected upon impact. Bystanders at the scene attempted to provide lifesaving aid before first responders arrived, but he was ultimately pronounced dead.
Investigators said the man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and there were no other vehicles involved. Preliminary findings at the scene suggest that excessive speed and alcohol consumption may have contributed to the crash.

The motorcyclist has been identified as Shawn Harold Hage, 46, of Chisholm. The incident remains under investigation.
