Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck While Crossing Interstate

A pedestrian was struck and killed while attempting to cross a busy Interstate 494 near Bloomington Saturday evening.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the fatal incident occurred shortly before 9 p.m. along the eastbound lanes of I-494, west of 34th Avenue in Fort Snelling. Authorities say a woman ran across the interstate and was struck by an oncoming vehicle in the right lane.
The pedestrian, 66-year-old Cynthia Finnell, from Bloomington, was pronounced dead at the scene. It is currently unknown if alcohol or drugs were detected in her system.

The vehicle involved was a 2013 Ford Explorer driven by a 49-year-old man from Lakeville. He was not injured in the crash and no alcohol was detected. The striking driver was wearing a seat belt and the vehicle’s airbags did not deploy.
The road was dry at the time of the incident and no other vehicles were involved. It remains under investigation with assistance from Bloomington Police and Airport Police.
Authorities have not released further information on why the woman was attempting to cross the interstate as of publication.
